Where I Stand
This page is a work in progress.
Humble Theologian aims to cover different Christian views fairly. At the same time, I do not want to pretend that I have no convictions. This page summarises where I currently stand on several theological questions and, just as importantly, where I am still wrestling.
These positions are not a creed, a test of fellowship or a claim that Christians who disagree with me are unserious. They are simply a snapshot of my current understanding.
My general posture
I write from within a broadly Baptist and evangelical context. I care about Scripture, discipleship, the local church and the formation of Christians who love God and neighbour.
I am not Reformed in the strict Calvinist sense. I lean more Arminian or provisionist on salvation. I am continuationist regarding spiritual gifts. I affirm believer’s baptism. I currently lean annihilationist on hell and soul sleep on the intermediate state. On eschatology, I believe in the return of Christ and the renewal of creation, but I am cautious about overly confident end-times systems.
I am still learning, so this page may change.
How I want to handle disagreement
For each topic, I want to ask:
- What does Scripture actually say?
- How has the church understood this?
- What are the strongest arguments for each view?
- What are the pastoral consequences?
- Where do I currently land and why?
- What questions remain unresolved?
That is the spirit of this page.
