Seek Him First and Foremost The one thing I ask of the Lord — the thing I seek most — is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections. —Psalm 27:4
When my girls were three and four, the younger one woke up first one morning. I snuggled with her for a while, then sat her down with a cartoon while I went out to putter in the garden. A few minutes later, my older daughter woke up and stumbled out of her bedroom half asleep. I heard her sister tell her, “She’s outside.” She hadn’t asked where I was, hadn’t called my name, but instinctively they both knew the first thing to do once your eyes open is connect with Mama. It struck me: That’s how I want to be with my heavenly Father. When my eyes open, I want to reach out and connect with Him before my feet even hit the floor. Before I pour that first cup of coffee, I want to praise Him. Before I reach for the morning paper, I want to thank Him for the day He’s about to send my way. The best days are always the ones when I do.
