“What Can I Do?” Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone —especially to those in the family of faith. —Galatians 6:10
What can I do to help you succeed?” I looked into the kind blue eyes of the older man in front of me. His attitude was poised, as if ready to spring to action at my response. Wes was a seasoned editor in the organization where I worked. I didn’t know him well, but word of my dilemma had spread quickly among my colleagues. A year earlier I’d been promoted to a new position within the company. Now I’d suddenly learned that because of belt-tightening, that job was ending in three months and no other jobs were available. I searched for open doors, but God seemed to tell me that self-employment was in my future. As I haltingly confessed this to Wes, he did spring into action. He gave me contract work. He paved my way with some associates. He asked probing questions to help me fashion my business plan. But most of all, he believed in me. “You can do it, kid,” he said again and again. Nearly twenty years later, I’m still self-employed. And I’m still inspired by Wes’s loving support.
