Epicurean As a Second Language Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others. —1 Corinthians 10:24
Well, they say a girl marries a man like her dad, I thought. Though I wouldn’t say my dad and husband are just alike, they do have similarities, I realized as I watched my husband relish his meal. Mark sure does love his food. Dad was the same way. After Mom died, he missed her desperately—especially her cooking. Mom made country comfort food to perfection. Unfortunately, I didn’t get that melt-in-your-mouth-creations gene, nor did Mom teach me her secrets. And frankly, I don’t have a distinguished palate. My husband can detect a hint of rosemary adorning a dish. I’ll eat anything that’s set before me, and I don’t need to have any idea what’s in it. I regularly cook, but my meals tend to be simple. Food is just another chore to get out of the way. We were a ways into marriage before I realized just how important food is to my husband. In fact, it’s one of his love languages. When I make an effort to cook something well, my husband feels loved. I’m still rather ESL—epicurean as a second language—but I’m learning to speak a language that he’ll understand.
Part of loving successfully is learning what says “I love you” to those in our lives. — Jenni Davenport —
