A Tarp and Two Boots “ You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.” And, “ Love your neighbor as yourself.” —Luke 10:27

I rummaged through the box of donations and placed a wool coat on the table in front of me. A disheveled man meandered up to me. I said, “Good morning. Happy Thanksgiving.” He wiped his dirty sleeve across his mouth. “Hey, how’s it going?” I stared into his desolate eyes and couldn’t believe he was our friend’s twenty-seven-year-old prodigal son whom I had been praying for. To see him face-to-face hit me like a brick. It pained me to imagine her son sleeping on the forest floor each night. My husband, Randy, sauntered over to us. “Hi. Good to see you. What do you need to get you through the winter?” he asked. “Man, I could use a tarp to keep me dry, and some rain boots too,” he slurred. “Meet me here next week, and I’ll have them for you. Enjoy your turkey dinner,” Randy chimed. The following week, we met him at our local church with the items.

He smiled. “Thanks, Randy. Did my mom tell you that I got a job?” “Yes, and I am excited for you.” On the ride home, I thanked God for restoring this man, and for allowing us to be an instrument of His love.
