The Look of God’s Love The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me. —John 12:45 niv

Bradley walks into my office and stands, rocking back and forth. He sticks his tongue out, sputtering and making his motor sound. I stop working. “Hi, Bradley! I’m glad you came to see me.” Bradley has profound mental retardation, yet he communicates his needs quite well to the staff. “Ahhhhh!” he says loudly, greeting me. He stands next to me and reaches for my hand. His touch is gentle, his palm slightly rough. He stops rocking and sputtering. Turning his head, he tips his chin up slightly and looks at me. His eyes reach into me, showing that we are of the same spirit. I feel as if Jesus is standing before me, sharing His love with just a look. Bradley’s giving me the greatest gift he has to offer—his look. I feel incredibly blessed. His look reassures me that God has chosen me to serve people with disabilities. I haven’t done anything to deserve Bradley’s gift—or God’s unending love. But I am grateful for both.

May we be open to seeing God in the most unlikely places and people. — Mary Beth Oostenbrug —
