Meet My Friend Inside the Tent of Meeting, the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to his friend. —Exodus 33:11
My children weren’t very old when they began coming home from Sunday school with pictures and crafts that included the words Jesus is my friend. Way before Jesus was born, God proclaimed himself to be a friend to people. After He helped Adam and Eve find their Eden resort, He actually walked and chatted with them every day. I don’t imagine they discussed lofty theological concepts. I doubt that Adam and Eve were rocket scientists—in fact, they were probably the original rubes—but apparently, God just liked being with them and talking about everyday stuff. Moses was another person that God liked to chat with as if Moses were His buddy. Sometimes it’s hard for us to imagine, but God wants to be our friend too. He doesn’t just tolerate our company; He enjoys us. He likes not just being our advisor, but our companion. We don’t have to be brainy or understand all the concepts He set in place in the world. We don’t have to meet certain expectations. We can just be His friend.
