When I Needed Help Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. —Psalm 124:8
I stood over my five-year-old daughter, Sara, as she lay in the hospital bed gasping and laboring for every breath she took. She had aspirated streptococcus into her lungs and was very ill. The doctors were unsure of her recovery. I was afraid and angry because death could come and steal her breath away in the night, and I could do nothing to stop it. I needed peace as much as Sara needed to be healed. I felt helpless, and her condition seemed hopeless. My wife and Sara were both looking to me for answers, but I had nothing for them. God brought me to my knees in the hospital chapel that night as I prayed for Him to spare Sara’s life and give me peace if He took her. I realized that God’s love is greater than life and death. His love reaches beyond the beyond. As a calm swept over me, I could face the future with hope, for help was simply a prayer away. Sara made a full recovery.
In the midst of the unknown and even death, God is our only hope, and He is always ready to help. — Vince Byrd —
