Living in a Jaguar But if there are any poor Israelites in your towns when you arrive in the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hard-hearted or tightfisted toward them. —Deuteronomy 15:7
A young teddy bear of a man sat on a blanket in the cold night air. Three cats and two dogs climbed over his lap, and a green parakeet sat on his head. I handed him my last fifty bucks. “I think God wants you to have this.” “You’re silly to give him your money,” my friend responded. “He probably drives a fancy car.” She chided me into the night and pointed a finger when someone told us the man drove a Jaguar. “See!” she said. “I told you so.” The next day, I saw that Jaguar. It was broken down and rusted and smelled of wet animals. It hadn’t moved from the spot where it sat in many years. As I walked by it, the young man opened the door and with a big smile said, “I remember you.” For the next twenty minutes I talked of God’s love with the mentally challenged young man, all the while thinking that if he were my son, I sure would be glad if someone took time to care.
