Dreams of the Heart Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life. —Proverbs 13:12
Wait, Mom, there’s one more present.” My twenty-one-year-old son handed me a computergenerated card sporting a picture of us in my daughter’s Miata convertible. I opened the card. A car key! My daughter, ready to start a family and in need of a more practical car, and my husband, eager to make me smile, conspired with my father to make my dream of owning this particular car come true. “Thank you,” I mumbled through tears of joy. I looked up into the eyes of my precious family, realizing they heard the cries of my heart and plotted this surprise together, no matter how impractical. Nine years have passed, but each time I drive that car, I reflect on my family’s sensitivity to my fragile tomboy dreams of adventure locked in an aging body. When the wind tugs at my hair and I smell the scent of fresh-mown hay, I reflect on God’s gifts and thank Him that I’m never too old to enjoy them.
A family’s example of sacrificial love points us to the much greater unconditional love of God. — Linda Jett —
