Doing What God Has Commanded Love means doing what God has commanded us, and he has commanded us to love one another, just as you heard from the beginning. —2 John 6
Have you ever thought of God’s new commandments?” I asked the group one night as we studied the Bible. “What do you mean?” someone said. “Well, there are the Ten Commandments in the Old Testament. Most are repeated in the New Testament, so they’re still in force. Then there are the Great Commandments that Jesus gave in the New Testament—to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and might, and to love your neighbor as yourself. But are there others?” Everyone seemed flummoxed. But then someone said, “To share our stuff when there’s a need.” “Exactly. What else?” “To be devoted to each other. Never take revenge, but leave it to God.” “Sure.” “Preaching the Word in season and out of season.” “Good,” I said. “In fact, most of the New Testament is God’s commands to us. We should learn them and obey them in the power of the Spirit.”
When we truly love God, we live His commandments almost without thinking about them. — Zach Davidson —
