All Because of Food Blessed are those who are generous, because they feed the poor. —Proverbs 22:9
My husband started a new church and a bicycle shop at the same time. One day Gary called me from the shop. “I’ve just hired Jim, and we’re hungry. Is lunch ready?” I didn’t know what to expect, but the young man in filthy bib overalls with a wild mop of hair shocked me. While Jim washed his hands, Gary whispered, “He’s homeless and a recovering drug addict.” “How can you trust him? I’ll fix food today, but no more.” Even as I said it, I knew Gary would bring Jim in for lunch every day, and I realized that I had an attitude problem. Soon Jim not only ate lunch with us, but he joined us for dinner every night. Within a month he showed up at church—no one cared about his ragged clothing. Before long, Jim accepted Christ as His Savior. Gary’s faith in Jim and one meal helped change my heart toward recovering addicts and the homeless. God helped me grow in grace and mercy all because of food.
