A Love Overwhelming Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. —1 John 3:18

The pile of packages the woman carried overwhelmed her. My middle-school son stood next to me in the checkout line, but he didn’t see the weary woman slowly progress down the long walkway toward an open register. Thirty yards separated her from the finish line, but from the looks of the tottering tower, I doubted she’d make it. Empathizing, I nudged my son and nodded my head in the woman’s direction. “Why don’t you go help her? She looks like she’s having a hard time.” The moment he recognized her predicament, he jumped to work, squeezing past the people behind us and making quick headway toward the over-burdened woman. Within seconds, he’d taken some of her packages and led her toward the closest checkout line. As we left the store a few minutes later, my son’s face beamed. I reminded him: Often in showing God’s love, we experience the overwhelming fullness of it for ourselves.

As we intentionally extend God’s love to others, we find our own need met with the overflow. — Michele Cushatt —
