Never Invisible to God Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the Lord, who had spoken to her. She said, “ You are the God who sees me.” —Genesis 16:13
A devastated woman slumped in the chair in my office at a domestic violence agency. As our counseling session neared its end for the day, she tried to convey how empty and alone she felt. She said she had no friends. Her husband was charming—everyone liked him but tolerated her because they were a package deal. Sometimes she even wondered if her own children cared about her. “I like you,” I said, looking directly at her. She raised her head then shook it. “You’re paid to like me.” I held her gaze. “No, I’m paid to listen to you. I like you because you’re likeable.” She watched me a moment, then looked out the window. I hoped she’d take in my words, that our weeks of working together would convince her I spoke the truth. But I knew that women whose husbands repeatedly beat them and treated them like objects usually grew into the role of object, not person. She blinked back tears. “Thank you,” she whispered.
