The Boy With the Stony Heart And I will give them singleness of heart and put a new spirit within them. I will take away their stony, stubborn heart and give them a tender, responsive heart. —Ezekiel 11:19

Lord, I just don’t think anything is going to ever have any effect,” I told God one day when talking with Him about my son. My husband and I had raised him to know God and Scripture. We’d tried to live our faith consistently. We’d prayed. But he said he didn’t want anyone running his life, not even God. And though we’d kept an open relationship with him over the years, if anything, the more I prayed, the harder his heart seemed to get. “I’m just wasting my time,” I reiterated to the Lord. “He’s as hard as a rock.” A little later the Holy Spirit responded. He reminded me that even though a rock may look hard, it has little cracks, holes, and crevices in it that water, dirt, and even bugs can get into. He reminded me that a rock isn’t really solid at all. Keep praying and loving, the Holy Spirit seemed to whisper. I can get in places that you can’t even see.

Don’t give up on the “rocks” you know. Keep praying and loving and trusting God to reach the places you can’t. — Jossy Grey —
