The Too-Big House Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay. —1 Peter 4:9
I didn’t realize it would be this big!” I exclaimed, walking through our newly built retirement home. “Neither did I,” said my husband. “What were we thinking?” We had chosen a plan far bigger than our needs dictated, even with a second kitchen downstairs. After moving in, we felt guilty over having so much when so many in the world have so little. We got on our knees and dedicated our home to hospitality. Over the years, study groups met in our home, and many meals were served. One day a call came. “A young single mom and her fouryear-old need a place to stay for a few months while she trains for a job in your area. Would you let them live with you, free of charge, and care for her little one?” Without giving it a second thought, we replied, “Of course!” Friends and relatives warned, “You’re too old to put up with a youngster.” Too old? Never! And suddenly, the too-big house we’d built was just the right size.
We enjoy God’s blessings much more when we share them with others. — Margaret M. Marty —
