Growing Love Dear brothers and sisters, we can’t help but thank God for you, because your faith is flourishing and your love for one another is growing. —2 Thessalonians 1:3
It always startles me to see my kids grow up and develop in different areas of their lives, especially in the way they love. For instance, my twenty-one-year-old daughter at one time loved me for the things I did and bought for her. The latest Barbie doll. The trip to the Disney Store at the mall. The array of Christmas presents. This moved into a time when she seemed to love me for the things I was to her. “Daddy!” A friend. A counselor. In time, though, she moved even beyond that. One day she said to me, “You’re my best friend, Dad.” I felt humbled by that, but I asked, “What do you mean?” “You’re always there. No matter how bad my world gets, I can always come to you and I’ll get your ear. I love you today for who you are. You’re godly. And I love that.” It struck me that she had grown in love quite a bit these last few years.
When it comes to loving, we’ll never completely arrive—we can always love more. — Sam Donato —
