The Christmas Carol Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God’s law. —Romans 13:10

Caroling to the neighbors would be so much fun!” I exclaimed as my friend and I shared coffee. Suzanne asked, “What if we sang O Tannenbaum in German to Mary?” A gruff-sounding older lady, Mary had escaped Nazi Germany, settling in our area years ago. Some on our block were put off by her ways, but Suzanne and I had tried to reach out to her. A week later, the singers gathered at my house for hot chocolate before beginning our trip around the block. The group ran through our special song. I was sure we had butchered the language. A knock at Mary’s door yielded nothing. We began to sing. The door soon opened a crack. We sang another carol. The door opened a bit wider. We then began to sing our German lyrics. The door flung open, and Mary came out on the front porch, singing with us. Her face almost broke with the wide smile, tears streaming down her cheeks. She told us later it was the best gift she had ever received.

Love means thinking of what might please someone else. — Betty Ost-Everley —
