Rejoicing in the Lord But let the godly rejoice. Let them be glad in God’s presence. Let them be filled with joy. —Psalm 68:3
The last time I went to the grocery store, I caused a small riot. I saw two old friends in separate checkout lines. After approaching and embracing Elsa, I pointed in Joanie’s direction, walked over to Joanie, and pointed back at Elsa. That’s all I did: point, walk, point. You should have heard the squeals of delight at the end of the checkout counters once the two friends had paid for their groceries. They hadn’t seen each other in months. There was hugging and rejoicing and praising God. People pushing grocery carts around our celebration looked back at us as they passed. Elsa, ninety-four, had recently fallen and was hospitalized for twenty-one days. “They said I’d probably never be able to live by myself again,” she said, leaning on the grocery cart. Of all people, Joanie, age ninety, understood. She’d had two falls resulting in broken bones and two hospitalizations herself. It was good to catch up with old friends. That reunion came about because I “just happened” to stop by the store for Tic-
Tacs.
To be instruments of God’s love, sometimes all we have to do is show up. — Jean Davis —
