Nights of Deep Sighs Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall. —Psalm 55:22

I don’t know what to do,” my friend Debbie wails. I listen on the other end of the phone line and squint at the clock. It reads 3:00 a.m. After twenty-five years of marriage, Debbie’s husband suddenly walked out on her. “Why is this happening?” Debbie continues. “I’m so lonely.” “I don’t know why,” I say, “but I know God will be faithful.” “I can’t stand this emptiness,” Debbie cries. A shiver of empathy rolls across my back as I think of my husband asleep in the next room. Debbie keeps talking, but now her words make little to no sense, more sobs and sighs than syllables. I open my Bible to the book of Psalms and start reading. Night after night, week after week, we repeat this process. I have no answers, but the soft love of God pours through the phone. Today, years later, Debbie still loves the sound of my voice, because to her it is the sound of God’s comfort in her time of need.

Often His Word is far better than our words. — Sandy Cathcart —
