My Rockin’ Rollin’ Daze The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. —Psalm 18:2
Not long after my divorce, a 5.5 magnitude California earthquake rocked and rolled our tiny apartment. I’d just had ankle surgery, and my plaster-encased leg prevented me from running to my preschool-age sons. I yelled, “Come to me,” and crawled toward my sons’ bedroom. My terrified children teeter-tottered from their room into my arms. A few days later, three-year-old Kyle let out a bloodcurdling scream. His tiny body quivered as he shrieked, “Ert kwake. Ert kwake.” Leaves on a tree trembling from the wind had thrown Kyle into a state of anxiety. I hugged Kyle and reassured, “It’s okay. Mommy’s here.” When unseen tectonic plates shifted underneath my marriage, uncontrollable anxieties shook my world. Like Kyle, I trembled, feeling emotionally traumatized. As I slept, I shivered, clinging to my Bible like my childhood teddy bear. I seized every chance to bury myself in God’s promises. Jesus called, “Come to me. I’m your rock, your refuge, and your deliverer.”
During my most terrifying, rockin’ rollin’ days, God held me close, reminding me, “It’s okay, Scoti. I’m here.”
We can always count on the Rock who is firm through all the earthquakes of life. — Scoti Springfield Domeij —
